Where to travel in April, and the two dates that decide it

April is not one month. It is two, and the line between them is Easter, which moves.

In 2027 that line falls early: Easter Sunday is 28 March, which drags Semana Santa, the northern school break and the first price rise of the year back into March and leaves April unusually clear and unusually good value. Orthodox Easter is five weeks behind it, on 2 May 2027, so Greece stays quiet all month and then fills on the first weekend of May.

Most April lists are written once and reused, which is why so many of them still tell you to avoid a Holy Week that is not there. The eight below are ranked on what April actually buys you.

The eight

1. Northern Japan, because the blossom has moved

Tokyo and Kyoto are finished by about the 10th. If a guide has sent you to Kyoto for late-April blossom, it has sent you to green maples and a full-price hotel.

The front keeps going north. Sendai and the Tohoku coast take the last week of April; Hokkaido takes the very end of the month into early May, which is the last blossom in the country and the least photographed. Rooms in Sapporo in late April cost a fraction of what Kyoto charges in the first week, and the crowd is domestic rather than international.

The catch, and it is a hard deadline. Japan's Golden Week starts on 29 April. In 2027 it is split oddly: Showa Day is Thursday 29 April, Friday 30 April is a normal working day, then Saturday 1 May through Wednesday 5 May runs continuously. So the crush is the first week of May rather than the last of April, and the 26th to the 29th is the sweet spot. The full seasonal picture is here, and the blossom timings are tracked separately.

Who it suits: anyone who wanted the blossom, read the prices for Kyoto in early April, and quietly gave up.

2. Nepal, and this is its best month

April and October are the two trekking seasons, and April is the better of the two for flowers: the rhododendron forests on the Annapurna and Everest approaches are in bloom through the month, which October cannot offer.

Days are warm low down and cold high up, the passes are open, and the lodges are staffed. The catch is haze. The pre-monsoon build brings dust and smoke into the valleys, so the mountain views are clearest in the first half of April and progressively milkier through the second. Early April buys the clearer air; late April buys the flowers. You do not get both.

Skip Kathmandu as a destination. Give it the day either side of the trek it needs for permits and a shower, and put the time into Pokhara instead, which is where the trailheads and the lake are. Our Nepal country page has the practical layer, including the entry rules for your own passport.

3. Andalusia, and in 2027 the calendar is kind

With Semana Santa in March, April in Seville, Granada and Cordoba is warm, open and not yet expensive. Daytime temperatures sit in the twenties, the orange trees are in flower, and the July heat that makes the region genuinely unpleasant is three months off.

One fixed date to plan around or avoid: the Feria de Abril runs 13 to 18 April 2027, opening with the alumbrao on the night of Monday the 12th. It is a real spectacle and it is also a week when Seville's room rates move by a multiple rather than a percentage. Decide which trip you are taking.

4. Morocco

April and October are the two best months in the Moroccan year, and April is the greener one. The Atlas passes are open, the High Atlas still has snow on it, the Sahara is comfortable rather than punishing, and the inland cities have not reached the summer temperatures that empty their streets between noon and five.

The catch: it is peak season, so the riads in Marrakesh and the desert camps book out early. Our Morocco route covers the sequencing, and the month by month explains why the two windows are so narrow.

5. Jordan

Spring is the whole argument. Petra in April is green, the wadis have water in them, the wildflowers are out across the Dana escarpment, and daytime temperatures at the site sit in the low twenties rather than the high thirties you get from June.

The site opens early and the coaches arrive from Amman late morning, so the first two hours after the gate opens are the only ones with the Siq to yourself.

The honest note: Petra is not a city in our catalogue, so there is no room shelf for it below. Most people base in Wadi Musa at the gate or come up from Aqaba, and the closest we can show you is Amman, three hours north.

6. Turkey's coast, and Istanbul

April is the tulip month in Istanbul, which is a real thing rather than a tourist-board invention: the city plants millions of them across Emirgan and Gulhane and they run through most of the month.

The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are warm on land and too cold to swim in, which is exactly right for the ruins. Ephesus and Pamukkale in April are walkable; in July they are an endurance event. Our Turkey route sequences them, and the Turkish calendar has the regional splits.

7. Sri Lanka, on the west and south

April is the tail of the dry season on the west and south coasts, and Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April is the one week of the year the whole country stops. The east coast is the wrong half of the island this month; that season starts in May.

The catch: the inter-monsoon can arrive from late April with afternoon thunderstorms, so the first three weeks are the reliable ones.

8. Taiwan, the wildcard

Nobody puts Taiwan on an April list, and April is its best month.

The winter damp has gone, the plum rains that define May and June have not started, and daytime temperatures in Taipei sit in the mid-twenties. The whole island is walkable in a way it simply is not from June to September. Hualien and the Taroko gorge are at their clearest, the high mountain roads are open, and the food is the reason people come back.

The catch: it rains anyway. Taipei is wet in most months and April is not an exception, it is just warm rain rather than cold rain.

What to avoid in April

Mainland Southeast Asia. This is the hottest month of the Thai, Cambodian and Lao year, and it is not a marginal call: Bangkok and the Angkor plain sit above 35C for weeks. Songkran runs 13 to 15 April 2027, with Chiang Mai starting a day early, and it is worth building a trip around if the water fight is the point. If it is not the point, you will spend three days wet, with the banks shut and the long-distance buses full.

Japan from 29 April. Covered above. Domestic rail and rooms are the problem, not the weather.

Northern Europe. Scandinavia, the Baltics, Scotland and the Alps are all in the gap: too late for winter, too early for summer, and with the seasonal operators shut. April is the one month where waiting for May changes everything.

The Caribbean's back half. Fine weather, but the season is ending and the rates have not fallen yet. May is materially cheaper for a nearly identical week.

The school-holiday note

April is normally the month the Easter breaks land in, which is exactly why the 2027 shift matters: with Western Easter on 28 March, the northern school break falls almost entirely in the last week of March and the first days of April, and by the second week the flights are cheap again.

Southern-hemisphere school terms are running, with the Australian and New Zealand autumn break falling in mid-April in most states, which lifts prices on the Bali and Fiji routes and leaves Europe and Japan untouched.

Orthodox Easter is the one to watch at the other end. On 2 May 2027 it pulls Greek domestic travel into the first weekend of May, so the last ten days of April are the quiet side of that line and worth booking.
