Almost every list like this recommends the same eight cities regardless of who is going, which is why so many group trips are fine rather than good.

Group trips fail on logistics, not destinations. Specifically on two things, and both are solvable before you book:

Money. A group where one person is counting and one is not will have a problem over a bill on the second night. Have the conversation first, agree a number per head, and pick the destination to fit the number rather than the other way round.

Pace. A group that has not agreed whether this is a rest trip or a see-everything trip will fracture on day three. Say it out loud.

If the group wants food, walking and one good night out

Lisbon

Cheap for western Europe, walkable, superb food at every price, and a night that starts late in Bairro Alto and can be as big or as small as people want, which matters in a mixed group.

Seville

The best-value city in western Europe for a group, and the tapas format is built for one: a counter, small plates, everyone eats what they want, and the bill divides without an argument.

If the group wants a beach

Split and the Dalmatian islands

The best group beach trip in Europe, because it is a base plus day boats rather than a resort. Split as the base, Hvar, Brac and Vis as day trips, and the ferry does the entertainment.

Go in June or September. August is expensive and full, and the Croatian calendar has the ferry timetable changes that catch groups out at the end of the season.

One warning worth having: Croatian beaches are pebble and rock, not sand. Croatia or Greece covers that properly and it is the single most common mismatch.

Naxos or Paros

Paros specifically suits a group, because it has real town life, good beaches and a nightlife that is not Mykonos prices.

If the budget is the constraint

Krakow

Cheap, compact, beautiful, and with the best food-to-price ratio in central Europe. Apartments that sleep six cost what a double costs further west, and the old town is small enough that nobody needs a taxi.

It also carries Auschwitz-Birkenau ninety minutes away, which is not a group trip activity and is worth a day, and worth saying plainly in the planning rather than discovering on the morning. The memorial issues its own timed entry, free without a guide, and it books out weeks ahead in summer.

Budapest

The thermal baths are the reason and they are a genuinely good group activity: several hours, everybody together, nobody has to talk if they do not want to.

If the group wants somewhere nobody has been

Tirana and the Albanian Riviera

The best-value coastal trip in Europe right now, and the window is closing. A hire car, the coast road over the Llogara pass, and Himara or Dhermi as a base.

Ljubljana and Lake Bled

Small, safe, walkable, and everything is a day trip from one base, which removes the group's biggest failure mode. The lake, the Vintgar gorge and the Adriatic are all within ninety minutes.

The four rules that make a group trip work

1. One base, four nights. Group logistics scale badly. Every city change costs more the larger the group, because six people take longer to leave a hotel than two. Four nights in one place beats two plus two almost every time.

2. Agree the money rule before you book. A shared pot for accommodation and group meals, individual for everything else, one app everybody already has. The specific rule matters much less than agreeing it while nobody is hungry.

3. Book one thing per day, and only one. A group cannot improvise. One fixed anchor per day, with the rest open, is the structure that survives six opinions.

4. Build in a split. Say on day one that anybody can opt out of anything without it meaning something. Groups that do this stay friends; groups that insist on moving as a block do not.

What to skip

Skip the four-city itinerary. Covered above and it is the single biggest cause of a bad group trip.

Skip the destination chosen to please everyone. It pleases nobody. Pick the thing the majority actually wants, say so honestly, and let people opt into it.

Skip August in southern Europe if the budget matters, which for a group of six it always does. September is the same weather at a fraction of the price and our September guide has the detail.
