The best time to visit Argentina
Patagonia has a three-month season and Buenos Aires has ten. The month table, the jacaranda weeks, and how to build a trip when the two disagree.

Argentina is 3,700km long and the two ends of it want different months.
Buenos Aires is comfortable for about ten months a year. Patagonia is open for about four.
So Patagonia decides your dates, and everything else fits around it.
The answer for most trips: October to November, or March to April.

Patagonia, which is the constraint
The season runs roughly November to March, with December to February the reliable core.
Outside it, many trails, boat services, roads and mountain refuges close, the daylight shortens sharply, and the weather in the far south is genuinely severe. The national parks administration publishes each park's season, which is the only reliable source on the shoulder weeks.
Within it, the trade is wind against crowds. December and January have the longest days and the strongest wind, which in Patagonia is a defining feature rather than a footnote. March and early April are quieter, calmer and have the autumn colour, and are our pick for anyone who does not need the maximum daylight.
El Chaltén, El Calafate and Torres del Paine across the Chilean border all run on this calendar.
Buenos Aires
October and November are the best weeks of the year. Warm without January's humidity, and the jacarandas flower through November, turning the avenues of Palermo and Recoleta purple. It shifts a week or two with the weather and it is one of the loveliest urban sights in the hemisphere.
March and April are the other window, on the far side of the summer.
January and February are hot, humid and half-empty, because the city goes to the coast. Some people love the quiet; most find the heat and the reduced restaurant and theatre schedule a real loss.
Winter, June to August, is cold rather than freezing, and it is the cheapest time and a very good one for the tango, the theatre and the eating. Our Buenos Aires areas guide and three-day route both work in it.
The wine country
Mendoza's harvest, the vendimia, runs from about February into April, and that is the time to be there: the vineyards are working, the festival is at the start of March, and the Andes are clear behind them.
Winter brings skiing at Las Leñas and Penitentes, and the wineries stay open.
Iguazu
Impressive in every month, and the choice is volume against comfort.
December to February brings the biggest flow and also heat, humidity and crowds. March to May and August to October are cooler, more comfortable, and the flow is lower and still substantial.
Two things about money and dates
Argentina's currency controls were lifted in April 2025 and the official and parallel rates have converged, so the old advice about timing a trip around cash and cuevas no longer applies. Our Buenos Aires areas guide has the detail and it is the biggest change in Argentine travel advice in a decade.
And the school holidays move prices more than the weather does: January and February, and a shorter winter break in July.
