Honeymoon destinations, minus the clichés

Most honeymoon lists are a resort catalogue. Eight destinations sorted by the trip you actually want, the flight-time rule, and what the word costs you.

Most honeymoon lists are a resort catalogue with a caption on each photograph. The useful question is not where, it is what shape of trip you actually want, because the three shapes barely overlap.

Rest. One place, no transfers, and the whole point is not moving.

Travel. A route, some effort, and the thing you will still be talking about in ten years.

One of each. A week of moving and a week of not, in that order, which is the right order.

Pick the shape first, then the destination.

If you want to rest

The Maldives, honestly

The obvious answer and it is the obvious answer for a reason: one island, one resort, a seaplane or a speedboat and then nothing to decide for ten days.

It is also the most expensive way to do nothing available. The specific trap is the transfer, which is a separate and substantial cost, and the drinks, which are priced with no competing venue for thirty kilometres. Read the all-inclusive terms with attention.

Not for a first honeymoon if either of you gets restless. There is no alternative if you tire of it.

The Seychelles, if you want to be able to leave

The argument over the Maldives is simple: the islands are big enough to have roads, villages and other restaurants on them. Mahé, Praslin and La Digue have public beaches, a bus, and self-catering options that the Maldives structurally cannot offer.

It costs less than an equivalent Maldivian week and gives you the option of doing something.

If you want a trip

Japan

The best two-week honeymoon in the world for a couple who like eating and walking, and it is not the obvious romantic choice, which is part of why it works.

The specific pairing that makes it a honeymoon rather than a holiday: a ryokan with a private kashikiri bath, in an onsen town, for two of the nights. That is the version of luxury Japan does better than anywhere.

Go in late April for the northern blossom or late November for the colour, and our Japanese calendar has both windows. The fourteen-day route is the shape and beyond the Golden Route is the quieter version.

Portugal

The value pick on this list and the one most likely to surprise you. Ten days runs Lisbon, the Douro, and either the Algarve or the Alentejo coast, all on short drives, all with genuinely good food, and at a fraction of the Italian equivalent.

The ten-day route is the sequence and our Algarve guide picks the coastal base, which is the decision that matters.

New Zealand

For a couple whose idea of a good day involves a walk. The South Island in one loop, self-drive, with the lodges as the luxury rather than the resorts.

The South Island road trip is the route and the calendar has the seasons, which run opposite to the northern hemisphere and make it a good December option.

If you want one of each

Italy

The default for a reason. A week moving through Rome, Florence and Naples, then a week on the Amalfi Coast or in Puglia not moving.

Go in September rather than June. The sea is at its warmest, the crowds have gone, and the price difference funds the better hotel. Our September guide has the detail, the ten-day route has the sequence, and the Amalfi towns guide says which two to skip.

Sri Lanka

The under-priced version of this shape. A week inland through the tea country and the cultural triangle on the hill train, then a week on whichever coast is in season, because the island runs two.

West and south from about December to March; east from about May to September. Getting that backwards is the one way to ruin the trip.

Greece

Athens or the Peloponnese for the first half and one island for the second. Our Greek islands guide argues for Naxos or Milos over the famous two, and Santorini honeymoons specifically covers the caldera version and its trade-offs honestly.

The three rules that matter more than the destination

1. Match the flight to the length. A seven-night trip with a fourteen-hour flight at each end spends a fifth of the holiday in transit and the first two days recovering from it. Long flight, fourteen nights. Short flight, seven is fine.

2. Avoid the awkward final connection. The single most common honeymoon complaint is arriving exhausted after a long-haul flight, an internal flight and a two-hour transfer. If the last leg is difficult, put a night before it.

3. Do not say the word while getting quotes. Some operators and venues price a booking described as a honeymoon higher than the same booking without the label. Mention it at check-in, where it might get you a room upgrade, rather than at the enquiry, where it might get you a different rate.

When to go, which decides the budget

Shoulder season, and the saving is large enough to change what you can afford. Late September and early May in Europe; the shoulder months of the dry season anywhere tropical.

The week either side of a peak is routinely half the price for near-identical weather, and Eurostat's accommodation price series shows the size of the swing. That difference is a better room, or four more nights, or the private transfer. Our September guide and May guide have the two best European windows.

What to skip

Skip the resort with one restaurant if you both like eating out. Ten days of the same buffet is the most common source of honeymoon disappointment that has nothing to do with the destination.

Skip the three-country itinerary. A honeymoon is not the trip to test how well you handle a 5am transfer together.

Skip the over-water villa as an automatic upgrade. It is genuinely lovely and it is frequently double the beach villa at the same resort, for a room you will be asleep in. Spend the difference on the length of the trip instead.

Before you book

Santorini honeymoons covers the most-searched single version of this trip and is honest about who it suits.

September and May are the two months that make the budget work, and Europe's best beaches has the coast options.

The best of hub collects the rest, and prices in our guides are quoted in each destination's own currency with the converter doing the rest.

Seasonal pricing patterns checked September 2026 against Eurostat's tourism statistics and national tourism boards including Visit Portugal. Resort pricing and transfer costs vary enormously by property, so confirm the all-in figure including transfers before comparing two destinations. Here is how we research and re-check guides.

Questions

What is the best honeymoon destination?

It depends on whether you want to rest, to travel, or to do one of each, which is the question most lists skip. For rest, the Maldives and the Seychelles are the honest answers and are priced accordingly. For a trip, Japan and Portugal. For both, Italy or Sri Lanka, which combine a route with a coast at the end.

How long should a honeymoon be?

Ten to fourteen nights if it involves a long flight, and seven if it does not. The specific mistake is a seven-night trip with a fourteen-hour flight at each end, which spends a fifth of the holiday in transit and the first two days recovering from it.

Does saying it is your honeymoon get you upgrades?

Sometimes a room upgrade or a bottle of something, and increasingly it moves the price the other way. Some operators and venues quote higher for a booking described as a honeymoon, so the practical advice is to mention it after booking, at check-in, rather than when you are getting quotes.

When is the cheapest time for a honeymoon?

Shoulder season, and the saving is large enough to change the destination you can afford. Late September and early May in Europe, and the shoulder months of the dry season anywhere tropical. The week either side of a peak is routinely half the price for near-identical weather.

Where should you not go on a honeymoon?

Anywhere that requires a difficult internal connection at the end of a long-haul flight, and anywhere with a rigid single-restaurant resort format if you both like eating out. Those two decisions cause more honeymoon disappointment than the destination choice does.
