The South Island road trip, done right

A South Island road trip planned around real driving times. Why Milford from Queenstown is a ten hour day, and the levy that tripled before you land.

The South Island rewards a plan built on driving times rather than distances, because the two do not resemble each other here. Two lanes, mountains, no motorway, and a national habit of underestimating all three.

Ten days minimum, fourteen if you have them. Christchurch, the lakes, the West Coast, Queenstown, Te Anau and Fiordland, and back. And one specific fix that saves a whole day: do not drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown.

The Milford problem, which is the whole trip in miniature

Queenstown to Milford Sound is about 290 km. On a map that is a morning.

It is five hours each way, on a good day, with no road closures. So a Milford day trip from Queenstown is ten hours of driving wrapped around a two hour cruise, and most of the driving is in the dark at either end if you want a mid-morning boat.

Te Anau to Milford Sound is two hours.

So the fix is one night in Te Anau, which turns a ten hour day into a four hour one and puts you in Fiordland proper rather than looking at it through a windscreen. It costs you one hotel night and buys back the better part of a day, and Te Anau itself is a good small town on a very large lake.

This is the pattern for the whole island. Nothing is far. Everything is slow. Plan on the drive taking a third longer than the mapping app says once you have stopped for the things you stopped for.

The levy you pay before you land

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is NZ$100 per person, paid before travel and on top of your NZeTA or visa processing fee.

It was NZ$35 until 1 October 2024, when it nearly tripled. That is the number a lot of older budgets still carry. A family of four is NZ$400 before anyone has booked a bed, and it is not refundable if the trip does not happen.

Most visitors pay it as part of the NZeTA application, which is the point at which people discover it. Immigration New Zealand explains who pays and who is exempt, and the exemptions are narrower than people hope.

The route

Days 1 and 2: Christchurch and out

Land, collect the vehicle, and do not drive far on day one. Christchurch is worth the morning: the Botanic Gardens, the transitional cathedral, and the Quake City exhibition, which is the honest version of what happened to this city.

Day 2: north-west over Arthur's Pass to the West Coast, or south to Lake Tekapo and Aoraki Mount Cook. Both are excellent. The loop below takes Tekapo first and returns via the coast.

Days 3 and 4: Tekapo and Aoraki

Lake Tekapo is turquoise because of glacial rock flour, and it sits inside an International Dark Sky Reserve, which is the reason to stay the night rather than photograph the church and move on.

Aoraki Mount Cook is an hour further up a dead-end road along Lake Pukaki, and the Hooker Valley Track is three hours return, flat, on boardwalk, and the single best short walk in the country.

Days 5 to 7: Queenstown and Wanaka

Down through the Lindis Pass.

Queenstown is the adventure capital and it is also genuinely beautiful under the marketing. Two nights, three if you are doing anything airborne or attached to a rope.

Wanaka is an hour away, quieter, and the better base of the two if you are not here for the bungy. Roys Peak is the famous walk and it is a serious climb, five to six hours return, mostly uphill, with a queue at the photograph.

Days 8 and 9: Te Anau and Fiordland

Te Anau, two hours from Queenstown, and this is the night that fixes Milford.

Day 9: the Milford Road early, which is one of the great drives anywhere, then the cruise, then back to Te Anau or on. If you would rather have the fiord without the coaches, Doubtful Sound is a longer and more expensive day and is the one we would pick on a second visit.

Days 10 onwards: the West Coast, if you have them

North through the Haast Pass to the glaciers at Fox and Franz Josef, then Hokitika and back over Arthur's Pass to Christchurch. That is the full loop and it needs the extra four days rather than being squeezed into ten.

What we cannot show you: Te Anau, Wanaka, Franz Josef and Fox are not in our catalogue, so there is no live room shelf for them here. The Christchurch and Queenstown shelves above are real rooms for your dates. For the small Fiordland and West Coast towns you will be booking direct, and in high season you should be booking them months ahead, because they have very few beds between them.

The timing, and why February is the answer

February and March are the settled months: the weather is at its most reliable, the days are still long, and the domestic holiday rush has finished.

That last point is the one overseas visitors underestimate. The New Zealand summer holidays run from just before Christmas into late January, and they move accommodation prices and availability across the whole island, not just in the resort towns. A February trip is materially easier to book than a January one.

December and January are the busiest and dearest. Winter is for the ski fields, and some alpine routes close.

What to skip

Milford as a day trip from Queenstown. The whole argument at the top.

The North Island, in the same ten days. They are two islands and a ferry crossing, and the drive from Auckland to Wellington is nine hours before you start. Pick one.

A campervan, if you have not driven one. They are slow on the passes, they need freedom-camping rules you have actually read, and on this route the towns have beds.

Booking Franz Josef or Te Anau a week out in February. Very few rooms, very high demand.

Queenstown for five nights. It is a good town and it is not the island. Two or three, then move.

Skipping Aoraki because it is a dead-end road. It is a two hour detour for the best mountain in the country.

Before you book

Fiji with kids is Elise's other Pacific route and the obvious alternative when the answer is a beach rather than a mountain. Where to travel in January has where New Zealand's summer sits against the northern winter, and the best places to travel in 2027 has the year ahead. Bali or Thailand is the comparison a lot of these same travellers make in the other direction.

The Queenstown city guide, the Christchurch city guide and the New Zealand country guide carry the practicalities, and there is more in the itineraries hub. When you are ready, Queenstown rooms are here and the bookable half is here.

Levy amount and driving times checked September 2026. The Milford Road closes for weather and avalanche control at short notice and the transport agency publishes live road status, which is the only source worth trusting on the morning itself. Here is how we research and re-check guides.

Questions

How long do you need for a South Island road trip?

Ten days is the honest minimum for the classic loop and fourteen is comfortable. The distances look modest on a map and the roads are two lanes, winding and slow, so the map time and the real time diverge badly. A seven day version exists and it is a Queenstown and Fiordland trip rather than a loop.

Can you visit Milford Sound as a day trip from Queenstown?

You can, and we would not. It is about 290 km each way and roughly five hours of driving in each direction on a good day with no closures, so a day trip is ten hours behind the wheel for a two hour cruise. Sleep in Te Anau instead, which is two hours from Milford, and the same trip becomes civilised.

What is the New Zealand International Visitor Levy?

A conservation and tourism charge of NZ$100 per person, paid before you travel, on top of your visa or NZeTA processing fee. It was NZ$35 until 1 October 2024, when it nearly tripled. Most visitors pay it as part of the NZeTA application, and a family of four is therefore NZ$400 out of pocket before anyone has booked a bed.

When is the best time for a South Island road trip?

February and March. The weather is at its most settled, the days are still long, and the January domestic holiday rush has finished, which matters more than most overseas visitors expect because it moves accommodation prices across the whole island. December and January are the busiest and dearest. Winter is for the ski fields and closes some alpine passes.

Do I need a four-wheel drive?

No. Every road on this route is sealed and suitable for an ordinary car, including the Milford Road. What you do need is a vehicle you are happy driving on winding two-lane roads with no shoulder, and if you are hiring a campervan, a realistic view of how much slower it will be on the passes.
