Japan's digital nomad visa, and the two words that limit it

Japan's remote work visa is the outlier among the schemes on this desk, and two words explain most of it: not renewable.

Six months, once, on a ¥10,000,000 annual income. It is not a route to living in Japan; it is a legitimate way to spend half a year there while working, which is a genuinely useful thing and a different thing.

The terms

Three of those deserve unpacking.

The income bar, which is high

¥10,000,000 a year is a materially higher requirement than any European scheme and one of the highest of any remote work visa anywhere.

For comparison, Italy asks about €28,000 a year, Portugal about €3,680 a month, and Thailand asks for savings rather than income at all. How to become a digital nomad has the comparison table.

It is an annual test rather than a monthly one, which is easier for freelancers with lumpy income than Colombia's month-by-month rule, and it is a high number regardless.

The eligibility list, which is the first gate

This visa is open to nationals of a defined list of countries and regions, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, all EU member states, Australia, Singapore and South Korea among others.

If your passport is not on that list, income is irrelevant. Check that first, because it is the gate that closes hardest. Japan's immigration services agency publishes the current list and the requirements.

The insurance requirement people fail

Private health cover with a minimum benefit of ¥10,000,000 for death, injury or illness.

This is where applications commonly come unstuck, because ordinary annual travel insurance frequently either falls below that limit or excludes stays over a certain length.

Read your policy's limit specifically, and expect to buy a dedicated long-stay policy rather than relying on the one attached to a bank account or a credit card.

The thing the visa does not give you

Six months, not renewable, is the whole design.

You cannot extend in country. You cannot roll one into the next. This is explicitly a half-year visa, and the Japanese government has been clear that it is not a residence route.

So think of it as: a legitimate half-year in Japan, with the right to work remotely, on a proper status rather than on a tourist entry.

And not as: a way to live in Japan. If that is the goal, the route is a work visa through an employer, or a highly skilled professional visa, and both are different applications with different logic.

What Japan actually costs now

Two things moved in 2026 and both affect a half-year stay.

The departure tax rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per person on 1 July 2026. A single line, and it is inside the airline ticket.

Kyoto's lodging tax rose steeply on 1 March 2026 and is now the highest in Japan, charged per person per night and reaching ¥10,000 at the top band. That matters for a long stay if Kyoto was the plan.

The workaround for a long stay is the same as for a short one: Osaka, fifteen minutes away on the shinkansen, where rooms under ¥5,000 a head pay no accommodation tax at all. Day trips from Kyoto runs the comparison, and what a Japan trip costs has the wider budget.

The Japan National Tourism Organization keeps the regional cost and transport detail for a longer stay.

For a six-month stay you are not in hotels anyway, and monthly apartments, share houses and serviced apartments are widely available in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. Fukuoka in particular has become the quiet favourite among people doing this: cheaper than Tokyo, warmer, smaller, and a short flight from Seoul and Taipei.

The honest assessment

What Japan gives you that almost nowhere else does: genuinely excellent internet, public transport that makes any base workable, a very high level of public safety, and a country that rewards being somewhere for months rather than days.

What it asks in return: a high income bar, a hard six-month limit, and a language barrier that is real. English is limited outside the big cities and outside the tourist economy, and six months is long enough for that to matter in a way two weeks is not. What to skip

Checking the income before checking the eligibility list.

Assuming your usual travel insurance meets the ¥10,000,000 limit.

Applying for a stay under 90 days that visa-free entry already covers.

Treating it as a residence route. It is six months, once.

Basing in Kyoto for six months without reading the March tax change.

Arriving in June. Japan's rainy season and then its summer are the two months a long stay should start after rather than in.
