Where to travel in October, the best month in the travel year

If you could only travel once a year and had no other constraints, you should travel in October.

More destinations are simultaneously at their best in October than in any other month: the Mediterranean has cooled to workable and the sea is still warm, Japan and Morocco are at their annual peak, northern Vietnam has turned, and Bali is between wind seasons.

Which is also the problem with it. October is no longer a quiet shoulder anywhere popular. Everybody worked this out. The lever that still works is not the month, it is moving sideways to less obvious places, and the list below is weighted accordingly.

The eight

1. Japan, and this is the answer

Late October into the first week of November is the best window in the Japanese year. Daytime temperatures in the high teens to low twenties, the driest run of the calendar, autumn colour working down Honshu, and none of the three domestic travel crushes.

The sequencing is the useful bit. Hokkaido peaks late September into early October. The Japanese Alps and Nikko through late October. Tokyo and Kyoto peak in late November, which is later than most people assume and is why a mid-October Kyoto trip finds green maples.

The catch: Japan's own arrival figures show the country no longer has a quiet season, so October is comfortable rather than empty. Who it suits: almost everybody, once.

2. Italy, and this is the other answer

Early October is the best week of the Italian year. The heat breaks, the light gets long and low, the harvest is on, the sea in the south is still warm enough to swim in, and the summer crowds have gone.

It is also the far side of the fortnight in August when much of the country closes, so everything is open and fully staffed.

The catch: shoulder season in Italy now means workable, not deserted. Rome, Florence and Venice are still busy. Who it suits: anyone who has only seen Italy in July and thinks they know it.

3. Morocco

October is the best single month of the Moroccan year, alongside April. The inland heat breaks and Marrakech drops back to the mid-twenties, the Sahara reopens after being genuinely unwise all summer, and the Atlas passes are open with the light at its best.

The catch: it is the peak of the good season, so book the desert camps and the riads ahead.

Who it suits: anyone wanting to do the whole country in one trip, which is only really possible in April and October.

4. Northern Vietnam, and only the north

October and November are the best months in Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Long. Dry, clear, warm days, cool evenings, and the light on the limestone at its finest.

The catch is enormous and it is the reason this entry says "only the north". Central Vietnam is at its worst in exactly these weeks: Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An take their heaviest rain and their typhoon season together, and Hoi An floods, sometimes to knee or waist depth in the old town. Who it suits: trekkers and photographers who will restructure the trip rather than push through.

5. Greece, in the first fortnight

September into early October is the other good Greek window, and the sea is the argument: the Aegean takes all summer to warm and holds it into autumn, so October swimming beats June swimming by a clear margin.

The heat has eased, the meltemi has dropped, ferries are still on summer timetables, and prices come down through the month.

The catch: mid-October is the turn. Timetables thin, smaller islands begin closing, and the weather becomes genuinely variable. Book the first half.

Who it suits: anyone who wanted the islands in August and could not face either the heat or the wind.

6. Bali, in the changeover

October is Bali's changeover month, sitting between the two wind regimes, which means the lightest winds of the year and swell angles that suit both coasts. The dry season is ending rather than ended, prices have dropped back from the July and August peak, and the crowds have gone.

It is the most under-rated month in the Bali calendar and it is covered properly here.

The catch: the wet season starts in November and October can front-run it. Who it suits: surfers, and value hunters.

7. Georgia, the wildcard

The one nobody puts on an October list.

Rtveli, the Georgian grape harvest, runs from early September to about mid-October, and the country in autumn is a genuinely extraordinary thing: family vineyards pressing grapes in clay qvevri buried in the ground, a wine tradition eight thousand years old, mountains turning colour, and a food culture that deserves far more attention than it gets.

Tbilisi is cheap, walkable and one of the more interesting cities in the region, and many nationalities can stay a full year without a visa, which is why it appears on our nomad cities list as well.

The catch: you are catching the tail of the harvest by mid-October, and the region's politics are not settled. Who it suits: anyone who has done Europe and wants somewhere that still surprises.

8. Fiji, at the end of the dry season

May to October is Fiji's dry season and October is the last of it, before the cyclone season opens on 1 November. Warm, sunny, low humidity and the calmest sea of the year, which matters if a boat transfer to the islands is in your plan.

The catch: it is the end of the window rather than the middle of it. Who it suits: families, for the reasons in Fiji family holidays, which turns on the tide rather than the resort.

What to avoid in October

Central Vietnam. Covered above and worth repeating: Hoi An floods.

Thailand's Gulf islands. Koh Samui, Phangan and Tao take their wettest weather October through December. The Andaman coast is not properly dry until about mid-November, which makes October the one month Thailand's two-coast trick does not rescue.

The Greek islands after the 15th. Ferries thin, businesses shut, and you can find yourself on an island with three restaurants open.

Assuming October is a bargain. It is a good month at close to peak prices in Japan and Italy. The saving is in going somewhere else, not somewhere later.

The school-holiday note

October's crowds are shaped by mid-term breaks rather than long holidays, and they land in different weeks in different places.

Northern-hemisphere half-term falls across late October in much of Europe, which produces a distinct spike in the last ten days of the month, particularly in Italy and Spain.

Southern-hemisphere school terms are running, so Australian, New Zealand and southern-African travel is at a low ebb, which is part of why Bali and Fiji are good value this month.

The practical read: the first fortnight of October is better value than the last, almost everywhere in Europe.
