Where to stay in Bali: the honest area guide
Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, Sanur or Seminyak. The areas ranked by who they suit, the real drive times between them, and the levy you pay on arrival.

Bali is not one destination and choosing one base for a whole trip is the mistake that costs people the most. Take two. Three or four nights inland at Ubud, then three or four on the coast: Canggu for cafes and surf, Sanur for calm water and boats, Uluwatu for cliffs, Seminyak if you want a pool and a restaurant that takes bookings.
The reason is arithmetic rather than taste. South Bali's roads are far slower than the map suggests, and a single base turns a holiday into a commute.

Every foreign visitor pays a Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000. It is per person, once per trip, not per night, and it is separate from any visa fee.
You pay it before you fly on the official Love Bali portal and carry the QR voucher.
What is new is that it is now actually collected. The levy launched on something close to an honour system and compliance ran at roughly a third. In 2026 the province started running spot checks at the big sites, Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, Besakih and Tegallalang among them, and around the airport. Hotels, agents and tour operators can now collect it on your behalf and keep a 3 per cent fee for doing it.
Pay it online yourself before you go. It takes two minutes, it costs the same, and it means you are not doing it on a phone with airport wifi in a queue.
The thing that decides everything: how long the driving takes
This is the section most Bali guides leave out, and it is the one that should shape the booking.

The peak windows are 8am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm on weekdays, with the worst of it 4pm to 8pm daily and all day Saturday. Uluwatu has a specific bottleneck: nearly everything heading to the Bukit funnels through the Jimbaran junction, and unlike Canggu or Seminyak there is no way around it.
Now do the sum that matters. A sunset dinner at Uluwatu, from a base in Canggu, is roughly an hour and a half to two hours each way in the afternoon and evening. That is a three to four hour round trip for dinner. Do it four times across a ten-day holiday and you have spent the better part of a full day in the back of a car, in traffic, on a holiday you booked for the beaches.
Two bases fixes this and costs you one hotel changeover. It is the single highest-value decision on this page.
The areas, ranked by who they suit
Ubud, and this is one half of most good trips
Inland, in the hills, an hour and a bit north of the airport in normal traffic. Rice terraces, river gorges, the temple and craft culture, and the cooler nights that come with altitude.
Who it is for: almost everybody, for part of the trip. Ubud is what makes a Bali holiday feel like Bali rather than like a beach anywhere.
The catch: Ubud has its own traffic problem, and central Ubud is nobody's quiet retreat. The Ubud area guide breaks the town into the streets that work and the ones that do not, because the difference between a good and a bad Ubud stay is about four hundred metres.
Bali's catalogue coverage on this site runs through Ubud, so these are real rooms in the one Bali town we can price live. Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Sanur are not in the catalogue yet, and rather than show you a shelf for the wrong place we have said so.
Canggu, for cafes, surf and working
North of Seminyak along the coast. Ten years ago it was rice fields. It is now the densest concentration of specialty coffee, coworking and long-stay apartments in Indonesia.
Who it is for: under-40s, remote workers, surfers, anyone who wants to be around other travellers. The Bali nomad guide has the internet, the coworking day rates and the monthly cost picture.
The catch, said plainly: Canggu grew faster than its roads. Jalan Pantai Berawa and the shortcuts either side of it are a genuine daily frustration, and the beaches are surf beaches with grey volcanic sand and rips. If your mental image of Bali is wading into calm water, this is the wrong coast.
Seminyak, for a hotel holiday
South of Canggu. Established, developed, and the most conventional beach-holiday version of Bali: hotels with pools, restaurants that take reservations, spas, and a beach you can walk down at sunset.
Who it is for: couples, first-timers who want it easy, anyone with a short trip who does not want the extra 20 to 40 minutes to Canggu on every airport run.
The catch: it is expensive by Bali standards and it is not where you will meet anyone local.
Sanur, the one we recommend more often than anyone expects
East coast, facing the sunrise. The reef sits offshore, so the water is calm and genuinely swimmable, which is not true of the west coast beaches at all. Flat seafront path, older crowd, and the fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan leave from the beach here.
Who it is for: families, anyone who actually wants to swim, anyone doing the Nusa islands, anyone who found Canggu exhausting.
The catch: it is quiet. That is the point, and it is also why some people find six nights of it too many. Know which you are.
Uluwatu and the Bukit, for the cliffs
The limestone peninsula at the southern tip. Cliff-top views, the best surf on the island, the beach clubs, and beaches reached down long staircases.
Who it is for: surfers, honeymooners, anyone whose priority is the view.
The catch: it is the most isolated choice and the Jimbaran bottleneck taxes every trip. Base yourself here and Ubud is a two hour drive. Base yourself elsewhere and Uluwatu is an expedition.
Nusa Dua, and why it is a specific taste
A gated resort enclave: manicured, secure, calm water, big international hotels, and almost no Bali outside the gate. It is genuinely excellent at what it does, and what it does is a resort holiday that could be in several countries.
Stay here if that is what you want and you are honest about it. Do not stay here expecting to stumble into anything.
What we cannot tell you
Per-area average room rates. Bali's spread within a single area is wider than the spread between areas, because a Canggu guesthouse and a Canggu villa are the same postcode and an order of magnitude apart. A published average would be a number with no useful meaning. The Ubud shelf above prices real rooms for your dates, and that is the honest version of the answer.

One base for the whole trip. The core argument of this page.
Kuta and Legian. They are cheap and they are close to the airport, and that is the complete list. Everything Kuta offers, Seminyak does better fifteen minutes north for not much more.
Booking a place "near Ubud" that turns out to be twenty minutes up a lane. Ubud's outskirts are beautiful and they mean a scooter or a driver for every coffee. Check the actual walk to Jalan Raya before you book.
A sunset trip across the island. Uluwatu from Canggu, Tanah Lot from Ubud, anything that means being on a south Bali road between 4pm and 8pm. Move the base, not the car.
Self-drive, unless you have a specific reason. A driver for the day costs less than most people expect, knows the shortcuts, and has the toll card.
Before you book
