The Gili Islands, and which of the three is yours
Three islands, no cars, and a boat from Bali longer and rougher than people expect. Which one suits you, what the crossing costs, and the horse question.

Three islands off the north-west corner of Lombok, none of which has a single motor vehicle on it, and all of which are further from Bali than most people realise when they book.
Gili Air for most people. Gili Trawangan if you want a scene. Gili Meno if you want almost nothing.
And a fact worth getting straight before anything else: the Gilis are not part of Bali. They belong to Lombok, the next island east. Bali is where you fly into and where the boat leaves from, and the crossing is two to three hours of open sea, not the thirty minutes to Nusa Lembongan.

Gili Air
The one we would book. Big enough to have a proper choice of restaurants, bars and dive shops; small enough to walk around in about ninety minutes. The beaches on the east side are the best of the three for actually swimming, with sand rather than dead coral underfoot.
It has a social scene without a party scene, which is the balance most people say they want and then fail to choose.
Best for: first-timers, couples, anyone over about thirty, families. Two to three nights.
Gili Trawangan
The biggest and busiest, universally called Gili T. The most restaurants, the most dive schools, the widest accommodation range and the only real nightlife.
Its reputation as a party island is a decade out of date at the edges and still accurate on the main strip. The north and west of the island are considerably quieter and have the better sunsets.
Best for: diving, nightlife, a bigger choice of everything. The catch: the main strip in high season is loud and the beach in front of it is not the island's best. Two to four nights.
Gili Meno
The smallest and the quietest, and the one honeymooners pick. Almost nothing happens. There is a salt lake, a turtle sanctuary, a handful of restaurants and a great deal of not very much.
Best for: honeymoons, reading, people who genuinely mean it when they say they want to switch off. The catch: if you get bored, you are on a boat to Air. Two nights, and know what you are buying.
Getting there
Fast boats leave from Padang Bai, Sanur and Serangan in Bali, and the crossing runs roughly two to three hours depending on the departure point and which island you land at. Tickets generally run IDR 400,000 to 700,000 or more one way, by operator and season.
Three things worth knowing.
It is open ocean and it is regularly rough. This is a materially bumpier crossing than the Sanur to Lembongan hop, and the safety record of the fast-boat sector has been criticised over the years. Choose an established operator rather than the cheapest ticket, and check that life jackets are actually accessible rather than stowed.
Boats beach rather than dock at the Gili end, so you will wade the last few metres with your bag.
In the wet season the crossings get cancelled, and a Gili trip planned against a fixed flight home is a plan with a hole in it. Come back to Bali the day before you fly, not the morning of.
No cars, and the horse question
There are no motorised vehicles on any of the three islands. Transport is bicycles, walking, and cidomo, the small horse-drawn carts that serve as taxis.
That car-free rule is the single biggest reason the islands feel the way they do, and it is why we would choose accommodation you can reach on foot from the harbour.
The horses are a real issue and it deserves a straight answer rather than either silence or outrage. Through the tourism boom of the 2000s and early 2010s, overwork, poor nutrition and limited veterinary access were all documented problems, and the criticism was earned.
It has genuinely improved. Welfare rules have tightened considerably over the past decade, an NGO works across all three islands on equine care and rescue, and on Gili Trawangan the carts are now GPS tracked for compliance.
Where that leaves a visitor: you can walk or cycle everywhere on all three islands, and on Air and Meno that is trivially easy. If you use a cidomo, look at the horse, and do not use one that looks thin, sore or overloaded. The market signal is the thing that has driven the improvement so far.
Diving, snorkelling and turtles
This is the main event and it is genuinely excellent. The Gilis sit in the Gili Matra Marine Park, turtle sightings on a shallow snorkel are close to routine, and Gili Trawangan is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive, with enough competition to keep standards up.
Conservation here is more than branding. Gili Eco Trust has run since 2002 on reef restoration, waste management and animal welfare, and in early 2024 the government cleared Gili Trawangan's main beach to give turtles dark, clean sand to nest on.
When to go
The same dry and wet seasons as Bali: dry April to October, wet November to March, with January and February wettest. The full seasonal picture is here.
The difference the Gilis add is the sea. The dry season is calmer as well as drier, which matters twice over here: for the crossing and for the visibility on the reef. May, June and September are the sweet spot for the same reasons they are in Bali, with better water on top.
Where to stay
Said plainly: those are Ubud properties, because none of the three Gilis is a destination in our catalogue, and neither is Lombok. Ubud is our Bali anchor and it is where most Gili trips start or finish. Gili accommodation is overwhelmingly small guesthouses and beach bungalows booked directly or through the big platforms.
What to skip
Swimming between the islands. The most important line on this page.
A one-night Gili trip. Four to six hours at sea for one night is not a holiday, it is a commute.
Booking the crossing home on your flight day. Weather cancels boats.
Gili T's main strip if you wanted quiet. Air and Meno exist and the boat between them takes fifteen minutes.
The cheapest fast-boat ticket you can find. This is the one place on this page we would spend more.
