Is Bali expensive now? The 2026 numbers

Bali is now two islands with two price levels, and the south is the expensive one. Real daily figures in rupiah, the levy, and where the money still goes far.

Bali is not expensive. Southern Bali is expensive, and the two facts get averaged together into an answer that is wrong for most of the island.

A cafe breakfast in Canggu can cost more than a full day of eating in Sidemen. That is not an exaggeration, it is roughly the arithmetic, and it is why "is Bali expensive" has no single answer.

Here are the numbers, in rupiah, checked September 2026.

The gap is roughly a factor of two, and it is almost entirely food and accommodation. Transport, entry fees, massages and petrol barely move.

What this means practically: a fortnight split as four nights south and ten nights elsewhere costs meaningfully less than fourteen nights in Canggu, and is a better trip. Our Bali areas guide has the trade-offs and the drive times, which are the other cost.

The levy, and how not to overpay for it

Bali charges a tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah per foreign visitor. Two things about it are worth knowing because both save money or hassle:

It is charged once per visit, not per night. A two-week trip pays it once.

Pay it yourself, online, before you fly. The official system is Love Bali, it issues a QR code by email, and payment is cashless. You can also pay at counters at the airport and the ports, which is slower. Several third-party sites will charge you a fee to submit a form you can submit yourself in three minutes, and there is no reason to use them.

It is separate from your visa, which depends on your passport rather than on Bali.

Where the money actually goes

The honest breakdown of a mid-range fortnight, in rough proportions:

  • Accommodation, about 45 per cent, and this is the line with the most give

in it. Moving one area inland changes it more than anything else you can do.

  • Food, about 25 per cent, and the same applies: the difference between

eating at warungs and eating at the cafes on the main strip is the difference between the two columns above.

  • Transport, about 15 per cent. A scooter is the cheap answer and a driver

for a day, at roughly 600,000 to 800,000 rupiah, is the safe one. Bali's traffic and its road surfaces are a genuine risk and the insurance question is covered below.

  • Activities and entrance fees, about 15 per cent. Individually small.

Temple entries, waterfalls and rice-terrace access are typically 10,000 to 75,000 rupiah, and they add up quietly.

Four things that quietly cost more than people expect

1. The airport transfer. From the airport to Canggu or Ubud at the wrong hour is an hour and a half of traffic and it is priced accordingly. Book it, do not negotiate it at arrivals.

2. The distances. Bali looks small and drives slowly. Ubud to Uluwatu is about two hours on a good day. A four-base itinerary in ten days spends two of them in a car, and that is a real cost even if the driver is cheap.

3. Scooter insurance. Most travel policies exclude motorbike accidents unless you hold a licence valid for that engine size in your own country, and many exclude them regardless. This is the single largest financial risk on a Bali trip and it is almost never in the budget. Check your own policy wording before you rent, because a hospital transfer is the expensive outcome, not the bike.

4. Card surcharges. Many places add a percentage for card payment, and ATMs charge a fixed fee per withdrawal. Take out larger amounts less often. And at any terminal, decline the offer to pay in your own currency, always.

Where it is still genuinely cheap

Sidemen, an hour east of Ubud, with rice terraces as good as the famous ones and no coach park.

Amed and the north-east coast, for diving and for rooms at a third of the southern rate.

Munduk and the hills, for waterfalls and cool nights.

Ubud, a few streets off the main road. The centre has southern prices now. Two hundred metres away it does not.

None of these are remote. All are on sealed roads and reachable in a normal day's driving, and our Bali seven-day route sequences several of them.

The one to skip

Skip Canggu as a base for a first two-week trip. It is genuinely good at what it is, which is a long-stay expatriate town with excellent coffee and a serious traffic problem, and it is the most expensive place on the island to learn what the island is like.

Four nights there is plenty. Ten nights there is a Bali trip that never left one road.

And skip the private villa with the pool if the budget is tight. It is the line people protect and it is the line with the most give: the same money buys three weeks in the east instead of ten days in the south.

Before you book

The Bali calendar decides the month, and Bali on a budget has the version of this trip built to a number.

Where to stay in Bali has the areas, the seven-day route has the sequencing, and where to stay in Ubud covers the base most people should pick.

The first trips hub collects the rest and the Indonesia country page has the practical layer.

The tourist levy and its payment channels checked September 2026 against the official Love Bali system and Indonesia's national tourism site. Everyday prices are ranges observed across the island and they move with the season and the exchange rate. Here is how we research and re-check guides.

Questions

Is Bali still cheap in 2026?

It depends entirely on where you stand. Ubud, the east coast and the north are still genuinely inexpensive, with warung meals in the low tens of thousands of rupiah. Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu now price like a mid-range European beach destination, and a cafe breakfast there can cost more than a full day elsewhere on the island.

What is the Bali tourist levy and how do you pay it?

It is 150,000 rupiah per foreign visitor, paid once per visit rather than per night. You can pay online through the official Love Bali system before you arrive and receive a QR code, or at the counters at the airport and the ports. It is separate from your visa and there is no reason to pay a third party to handle it.

How much money do you need per day in Bali?

Roughly 400,000 to 700,000 rupiah a day per person for a comfortable trip outside the southern beach strip, including a good room, warung and mid-range meals and a scooter. In Canggu or Seminyak the same standard runs closer to 900,000 to 1,500,000, and the gap is almost entirely food and accommodation.

Why has Bali got more expensive?

Demand in the southern strip has grown much faster than the land available for it, and the cafe and restaurant scene there is priced for long-stay foreign incomes rather than local ones. The rest of the island has not moved nearly as much, which is why averages for Bali are misleading and location-specific figures are not.

Where in Bali is still cheap?

Ubud once you are a few streets off the main road, Sidemen and the east, Amed and the north coast, and Munduk in the hills. All of them have warungs at local prices, rooms at a fraction of the southern rate, and none of them are remote or hard to reach.
