Thailand is one of the best long-haul family destinations there is, and the two decisions that determine whether it feels that way are which coast you book and which months you avoid in the north.
Everything else, the food, the warmth towards children, the medical care in the cities, the cost, is easier than people expect.

Every traveller entering Thailand needs a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, and that includes infants and newborns. There is no age exemption.
It is free. File it on the Immigration Bureau's own portal, where you can submit a group application covering up to ten travellers at once, which is how a family should do it rather than filing four separate forms.
A number of lookalike sites charge for this. They are selling you a form the government provides at no cost.
And the 450 baht arrival fee is not being collected. A national committee endorsed a flat 450 baht per foreign visitor in August 2026, it still needs a public hearing and Cabinet approval, and collection is not expected before the first quarter of 2027. Nobody should be charging a family for it now.

This is the fact that decides whether your beach week works, and it is missing from most family guides.
Thailand's two coasts have opposite wet seasons.

For a family the sea state matters more than the rain. A wet afternoon is fine. A week of surf and rips on a beach nobody can swim at is not.
Two more things about Thai beaches with children:
Seasonal rip currents are real and are not always signed in the way an Australian or Californian beach would be. Look for flags, and ask at the hotel that morning rather than assuming yesterday's conditions.
Many of the famous beaches are surf beaches. If your mental image is calm turquoise water you can wade into, choose deliberately for that: Koh Lanta's west coast, Railay near Krabi and much of the Gulf side in season are gentler than the postcard beaches with the big waves in them. The north, and the months to move
Chiang Mai is excellent with children and it has a hard seasonal caveat.
From roughly February to April the valley fills with smoke from agricultural and forest burning. In 2026 the province banned open burning from 1 February to 31 May and still logged over 2,090 fire hotspots by late March, with several days ranked among the most polluted cities in the world.
With a child under about five, or anyone with asthma, that is a reason to change the dates, not a reason to pack masks. November to mid-January is the clear window. The Chiang Mai area guide has the full picture, and three days in Chiang Mai is the itinerary if you go.
The shape that works
Bangkok two or three nights, Chiang Mai three or four, one island for five or six. Do not add a second island.
Bangkok with children is easier than its reputation: the river boats are public transport that children love, the Skytrain is above the traffic, and Bang Krachao, the green loop in the river, is a bicycle afternoon. Three days in Bangkok has the adult version and the fare rule that excludes foreigners.
Chiang Mai with children is elephants done carefully, a cooking class that most schools will adapt for children, and Doi Inthanon for the waterfalls.
The island is where the trip slows down, which after two cities is the point.
On elephants, since it is the question every family asks
Rule out anything offering riding, bathing with the elephants or performances. That one filter removes most of the problem. Bathing has been rebranded as ethical and is not: it means the animals are handled and kept available to be handled all day.
Then ask three questions and treat a non-answer as an answer:
- How are the elephants kept when visitors are not there?
- Can the herd avoid people if it wants to?
- Does the operator breed or acquire elephants?
If you cannot get straight answers, do not go. Children remember these choices, and it is not a compulsory part of a Thailand trip.
The age bands
Under two. Very doable. Thailand is warm to babies to the point where strangers will want to hold yours, which some parents love and some find a lot. Formula, nappies and baby food are widely available in the cities and thinner on small islands, so stock up before a ferry.
Two to five. The sweet spot for the beach half and hard work for the temple half. Two anchors a day, a pool in the middle, and lower expectations of ruins.
Six to eleven. Everything opens up: snorkelling, cooking classes, cycling, the markets, the longtail boats.
Twelve and up. The adult two-week route works essentially unmodified.

Mosquitoes. Dengue is present in Thailand and there is no vaccine most travellers will have. Repellent, long sleeves at dusk, and air conditioning or a net at night. This is a routine precaution rather than an alarm.
Traffic. Pavements are inconsistent and traffic does not always stop for pedestrians. Hold hands, and do not put a small child on the back of a scooter, however normal it looks locally.
Medical care in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket is genuinely excellent and the private hospitals are used to foreign families. Travel insurance that covers it is not optional.
Sun. The UV is high year round. Rash vests do more than sunscreen with small children, and hats survive the sea better than lotion.
