New Year's Eve destinations worth the surge pricing
Almost every city triples its rates for one night and only some earn it. The seven that do, the ones that do not, and the trick of arriving on the 1st.

Almost every city on earth doubles or triples its rates for 31 December, and a small number of them earn it.
This guide is about telling those apart, and about the arithmetic that makes the whole question optional.
The trick, first
Arrive on 1 January.
Rates collapse from the 2nd. Flights on New Year's Day itself are among the quietest of the winter. And January is the cheapest month of the year in Europe, which our Europe in winter guide sets out.
You give up one night and the trip costs roughly half. If the destination is the point rather than the night, that is the whole answer and the rest of this page is optional.
The four that earn it
1. Sydney, for the fireworks
The first of the genuinely large displays, which is why it is broadcast worldwide.
Two displays: a family one at 9pm and the midnight one, which matters enormously if you are travelling with children.
The free vantage points are real and they fill from early morning. Mrs Macquarie's Point, Blues Point and Bradfield Park all require getting there absurdly early, and the city publishes which are ticketed and which are not each year, because the arrangements change.
Our better suggestion: a north-shore harbourside park, or a ferry, which our Sydney areas guide explains is the best-value transport in the city.
The catch: it is peak summer, peak Australian school holidays and peak pricing, all at once.
2. Edinburgh, for the three days
Hogmanay is not a night, it is a festival, and that is what distinguishes it. A torchlight procession on the 30th, a street party and concert on the 31st, and the Loony Dook, a cold-water swim, on the 1st.
It is a genuine cultural tradition rather than a countdown with a brand attached, and Scotland treats 1 and 2 January as public holidays, which almost nowhere else does.
The catch: it is ticketed, it sells out, and Edinburgh accommodation over Hogmanay is priced like Edinburgh accommodation in August.
3. Rio de Janeiro, for the scale
Réveillon on Copacabana is one of the largest gatherings on earth: millions of people, dressed in white, on a four-kilometre beach, with fireworks fired from barges offshore.
The white is the tradition and so is jumping seven waves at midnight, and almost everyone participates.
It is high summer, which our Brazilian calendar notes is also the peak of the price and the humidity. Rates over Réveillon rival Carnival's.
4. Japan, for the opposite of all of this
Japanese New Year is quiet, domestic and the most important holiday of the year, and it is the antidote to everything above.
Joya no Kane: temple bells rung 108 times at midnight. Hatsumōde: the first shrine visit of the year, in the small hours or the following days. Toshikoshi soba eaten on the 31st.
Kyoto and Tokyo are both extraordinary for it, and it is genuinely moving in a way a fireworks display is not.
The catch, and it is significant: this is one of the three great Japanese domestic travel crushes. Trains fill, and a large share of restaurants and shops close from about 29 December to 3 January, which catches visitors badly. The Japanese calendar has the detail.
The three that are better than you would guess
Reykjavik. Iceland has almost no fireworks regulation and the whole city sets them off at once, from every garden, for hours. There is no organised display because the entire population is the display. The bonfires on the 31st are the local tradition and are where to be beforehand.
Vienna. The Silvesterpfad turns the old town into a series of open-air stages and dance floors, and the city waltzes in the street at midnight, which is exactly as unlikely and as good as it sounds. Our two-day Vienna route has the rest of the city.
Valparaíso, Chile. Fireworks fired along a long bay from multiple points, in warm summer weather, watched from the hills of a city built on hills.
The ones that do not earn it
Times Square. You stand in a pen for eight or more hours, in the cold, with no re-entry and no toilets, for a sixty-second descent. New York that week is wonderful and our areas guide covers it, and this specific night is not how to spend it.
London. The Thames display is ticketed and sold out, the free views are poor, and the Tube is heaving. The 1st is better: the New Year's Day Parade is free and the city is calm.
Paris. There is no official fireworks display most years. The Champs-Élysées gathering is large and unstructured and the restaurant réveillon menus are fixed-price and expensive.
Any beach resort. You will pay a compulsory gala dinner supplement, which is frequently added to the room rate whether or not you attend.
The compulsory gala dinner, which nobody warns about
This is the single most common New Year travel surprise.
Hotels and resorts across southern Europe, the Caribbean, Egypt, the Gulf and Southeast Asia add a mandatory New Year's Eve dinner charge, per person, to stays covering 31 December. It is often not shown in the headline rate and is occasionally not shown at booking at all.
Ask specifically, in writing, before you book, and get the number.
Before you book
Christmas holiday destinations covers the fortnight this sits at the end of, and December has the month.
January is where the value is, and Europe in winter explains why the first week of the year is the cheapest good travel in Europe.
The when to go hub collects the seasonal guides and the December month page rates the catalogue. Prices are in each destination's own currency and the converter does the rest.
Event formats and ticketing checked September 2026 against Edinburgh's Hogmanay organisers and the City of Sydney. Ticketed events sell out months ahead and free vantage points are managed differently each year, so check the current arrangements rather than last year's. Here is how we research and re-check guides.
