The Dubai layover guide
Dubai's airport is 15 minutes from the old city on the metro, which almost nobody uses. What fits in six hours, twelve and a full day, and when to stay put.

Dubai's airport is unusually close to the city, which is the fact that makes its layovers different from most hubs.
The metro reaches the old creek district in about fifteen minutes from Terminal 3, and almost nobody uses it.

Under four hours: stay in the terminal. Immigration, the metro and the return with a sensible buffer take roughly two and a half hours all in.
Five to six hours: the creek. Two hours on the ground, which is exactly enough for the souks and an abra crossing.
Eight to twelve hours: the creek plus one modern thing, or a hotel and a sleep.
Twenty-four hours: a real day, and our two-day Dubai route is the shape to borrow the first half of.
What fits in six hours
Metro from the airport to Al Ras or Al Ghubaiba. Fifteen to twenty minutes, a couple of dirhams, air-conditioned.
The Gold Souk and the Spice Souk in Deira, best early or in the evening.
The abra across the creek, which costs one dirham and takes four minutes, and is the best value transport anywhere in the world.
Al Fahidi on the other bank: coral-and-gypsum houses with wind towers, and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, which does a meal-with-questions session if the timing lands.
Then back. That is a genuinely good two hours and it is the half of Dubai the marketing ignores, which our honest verdict argues at length.
What fits in twelve
All of the above, plus one of:
The Dubai Mall and the fountain, on the metro, with the aquarium wall which is free to look at from inside the mall.
The Museum of the Future, if it is booked, which it needs to be.
The Dubai Frame, which is a better view than its price suggests and much cheaper than the tower.
Or the Burj Khalifa, and book a mid-morning slot rather than sunset: it is cheaper, quieter and the afternoon haze has not built. Sunset slots sell out weeks ahead and are the most expensive of the day.
Or a hotel and a sleep, which on a night connection is the correct answer. Dubai hotels are inexpensive relative to the airport ones, and our areas guide has the metro-adjacent options.
What fits in twenty-four
A proper day, and the shape we would use: creek in the morning, indoors through the middle of the day, beach or Alserkal Avenue in the late afternoon, and a rooftop or the fountain in the evening.
Or Abu Dhabi, ninety minutes each way, for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is free and timed and books out. Our day trips guide has the detail and it is a full day rather than a half.
The airport itself
Dubai International is enormous and well equipped, with in-terminal hotels that let you avoid immigration entirely, sleeping pods, showers, a quiet zone and a pool in one of them.
Terminal 3 is the Emirates terminal and is the one most long-haul passengers transit. The metro station is at Terminals 1 and 3, and the operator publishes the line map and the first and last trains.
Left luggage is available, which is what makes the excursion practical with hand baggage.
Allow properly for the return. Dubai's immigration queues on the way back in are variable and the metro stops running earlier than a 24-hour city ought to, which catches people out on a late connection. Check the last train.
The summer warning
June to September, do not plan an outdoor layover.
The middle of the day is genuinely dangerous outdoors, with temperatures well above 40 degrees and high humidity on the coast. A summer layover belongs in the terminal, a mall or an indoor attraction.
