The island was claimed by Spain after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1493 and colonised by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1508. It was contested by other European powers into the eighteenth century but remained Spanish for the next 400 years.

Porto Rico, for thirty-three years

Puerto Rico was acquired by the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. The name was changed to Porto Rico by the United States after the Treaty of Paris, and changed back to Puerto Rico in 1931 by a joint resolution in Congress.

Puerto Ricans have been US citizens since 1917. Congress approved a territorial constitution in 1952, allowing residents to elect a governor, a senate and a house of representatives. The territory sends a nonvoting resident commissioner to Congress.

Castillo San Cristóbal is a fortress in the Old San Juan historic quarter of San Juan, the capital municipality of Puerto Rico, known for being the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World. Dating back to defense expansions following attacks by the English in 1598 and Dutch in 1625, it was first constructed in 1634 as the Caballero de San Miguel and the Garita del Diablo.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro, most commonly known as El Morro, is a large fortress and citadel in the Old San Juan historic quarter of San Juan, the capital city and municipality of Puerto Rico. Commissioned by King Charles I of Spain in 1539, it was first built as a fortified tower in honor of King Philip II, who oversaw its expansion into a hornwork bastion fort by 1595.
